Art For Dining Room

The dining room is the heart of the house. It is where family members come together on a regular basis, for sharing their daily lives as well as partaking in their daily food. It is often a multi-purpose room; children may do their homework on the table, the mother of the family may cut fabric for a quilt there, dad may have his laptop on the table figuring taxes or paying bills.

Since all members of the family use the dining room, it is important the color and decoration of the room be comfortable for all. This does not mean it needs to be bland.

Quite the opposite, this is the room where the various personalities of the family can be incorporated into the décor, creating a room that expresses the personality of all who use it.

Usually adjacent to the kitchen and close to the family living room, dining room furniture should blend with those rooms in particular. If oak is featured in the kitchen or living room, dining room furniture made of oak will fit right in. The same is true for any other woods or styles of décor. Keeping a theme will result in a feeling of harmonious balance. The furniture is usually minimal. Many dining rooms cannot accommodate anything more that a table with chairs, and a sideboard, or a curio cabinet. A larger space might include bookcases, plants or a desk. Decorating dining rooms can be done by either the home owner or a professional. Some of the most successfully decorated dining rooms combined the efforts of both; the home owner stating their preferences in general terms like a preference for abstract backgrounds, while the professional attends to the details of color and style.

The dining room is a place for decorating boldness. Since the room can easily be repainted or papered, bold geometric designs, vibrant paint, or huge murals often work well there. The use of mirrors to make a small room seem larger is another decorating trick of both amateur and professional decorators. Everything from Victorian era chandeliers to abstract backgrounds can be found in dining rooms, and they all can work. If the family enjoys the room, is comfortable doing their myriad of activities there, and if the décor blends with the rest of the house, the decorating scheme should be considered successful.
