Art For Kids Room
Kids’ rooms are fun to decorate. Keep kids’ rooms simple, washable, and safe. Plan for the floor coverings, walls, furnishings, and fabrics to be kid friendly.
Decorating a kids’ room begins with floor coverings, which should be pleasant for kids who spend time playing on the floor. Carpet tiles are a great alternative to traditional wall-to-wall carpeting, since single tiles can be replaced if stained or damaged. Carpet tile can also be installed by the average handy homeowner without professional equipment. Other options include laminate flooring or wood-look vinyl. Provide a large washable rug for the play area, making sure the rug has a no-slip backing for safety.
Walls can be decorated with a washable satin finish paint rather than flat latex. Chalkboard paint can provide a wall for artistic play. Cork as a wall covering also provides bulletin board space for artwork and posters. Another good choice is a washable vinyl wall covering. Wood paneling is also sturdy and attractive for kids’ rooms and can be used in combination with paint or other wall coverings.

Furnishings should include drawers or shelves for storage, especially if the closet in the kids’ room is not large. Shelves can be better than toy boxes, since kids can see everything and do not have to dump an entire box to find one desired toy. Beds with drawers underneath are available, as well as loft beds with dressers or shelf units. Elevated beds should have sturdy ladders and guardrails for safety. Unfinished wood furniture can be covered with colorful, washable enamel paint as insurance against crayons and scuff marks. Encourage kids to clean up after themselves by providing a laundry hamper and wastebasket as well.
School children need a place to study, so provide a table or desk with good task lighting. Younger children will appreciate a night light. Windows should have shades or opaque curtains for nap time, while letting in sun during waking hours. Curtains that end at the window sill are better than floor-length draperies, since kids tend to pull on long drapes and sometimes pull down the curtain rods.
Finally, add color and patterns with bedspreads, pillow shams, and throw pillows. Floor pillows are good near a low bookshelf to encourage reading. All decorator fabrics for kids’ rooms should be machine washable and pillow covers should be removable for easy laundering.
